I spent years trying to lose cheek fat. No, scratch that, I spent decades trying to figure out how to lose cheek fat. You know those babies that are born with such chubby cheeks that you can hardly see their eyes and you just want to  grab their little cheeks and squeeze? That was me.

Now, on an infant, that’s cute, but by the time I was a little kid it was less so. When I was ten years old I’d heard “chipmunk cheeks” so  many times that I just felt like screaming. In fact, I spent more than one night crying about it, wishing there was some way to lose fat cheeks.

It didn’t help that from childhood on I was not what you call a thin child. While I never broke chairs, sideways through the doorway obese, I was definitely pretty thick. I  was from a long line of stocky East Europeans and it showed. I hoped that the onset of puberty would mean that I would start losing cheek fat, but that was not the case. All puberty meant was that I had fat cheeks that were now covered with acne.

Despite failing to lose cheek fat or, for that matter, any other fat, I didn’t let it slow me down. I did track and cheerleading in high school, and I was homecoming queen. I was pretty popular and pretty happy, but my weight and my chubby cheeks still bothered me.

Once I got to college, I got into working out. I started running every day, at first to try and stop the freshman fifteen that I definitely did not need and later because I simply enjoyed it, and I started lifting weights. Before I knew it, I was in pretty darn good shape.

This new found love of exercise, something I’d never really had even when I was a multi sport athlete in high school, led me to start looking a lot more closely at what I was eating. Unlike most girls who just got to college, I actually started to eat better.

And, not surprisingly, I lost weight. Over the first two years at college, I dropped about thirty pounds and, I do say so myself, I was looking good. My butt was tight, my arms were toned and my stomach was flat. Unfortunately, my cheeks were still chubby. My new found fitness regime helped a little, but I still needed to lose face fat.
